Sylvan Lake

A mirror-still lake ringed by granite.

Sylvan Lake is the postcard stop in Custer State Park: a small lake framed by pines and enormous granite boulders. Walk the shoreline loop, rent a paddle boat, or picnic on the rocks.

It's also the trailhead for the hike to Black Elk Peak, and the starting point for the shorter, scenic Sunday Gulch loop.

Highlights

  • Lakeshore loop trail
  • Paddle boats and swimming in season
  • Trailhead to Black Elk Peak
  • Picnic areas

Local tips

  • The parking lot fills by mid-morning in summer. Arrive early or late.
  • Bring layers; it's often cooler at the lake than in town.
