Needles Highway & the Needles Eye

Granite spires and one-lane tunnels on SD 87.

Needles Highway (SD 87) climbs through Custer State Park past towering granite spires, hairpin curves and tunnels blasted straight through the rock. The same Needles you can see from the cabin's hilltop are up close here.

The famous Needles Eye, a slender hole through a granite needle, sits just beside the road. The Needles Eye tunnel is very narrow, so check vehicle width before you go.

Local tips

  • Wide vehicles and large RVs cannot pass the narrowest tunnels. Check the signage for limits.
