Cathedral Spires & Little Devil's Tower

Granite pinnacles you can hike right up to, off the Needles Highway.

Cathedral Spires are a crowd of tall granite pinnacles beside the Needles Highway, near the Limber Pine Natural Area. A trail from the roadside leads into the Black Elk Wilderness and right up among them.

The trail network here also reaches Little Devil's Tower, another granite spire, and links up with the route to Black Elk Peak, so you can choose anything from a short scramble to a big day.

Local tips

  • Wilderness areas have their own rules. Check with Black Hills National Forest or the park for current trail conditions.
  • Parking at the trailhead is limited. Early morning is quietest, and the light on the granite is best then.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: the footing is rocky and can be steep.
