Custer State Park & the Wildlife Loop

Bison, pronghorn and begging burros, minutes from the cabin.

Custer State Park is the Black Hills' wildlife showpiece. The park's west entrance is just down the road from the cabin, so a sunrise or sunset drive is an easy add-on to any day.

The 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road winds through open grassland where bison herds graze, pronghorn bound across the hills and the park's famous "begging burros" will walk right up to your car window.

Highlights

  • Wildlife Loop Road
  • Bison herds
  • Begging burros
  • Fall Buffalo Roundup
  • Lakes, trailheads and picnic areas

Local tips

  • A park entrance license is required; buy it at an entrance station and keep it on the dash.
  • Wildlife is most active near dawn and dusk. Give bison plenty of room and never leave the car to approach them.
  • Please don't feed the burros. They're friendly, but it isn't good for them.
