Rising out of the prairie in northeastern Wyoming, Devils Tower was named the first U.S. national monument in 1906. The tower is a column of fluted rock that is sacred to many Native American peoples, who know it by names such as Bear Lodge.
An easy paved trail loops around the base, with views up the columns and out over the Belle Fourche River valley. It makes a memorable long day trip from the Black Hills.
