Lead & the Homestake Gold Mine

A hillside gold-mining town with a famous mine and winter skiing.

Lead (say "Leed") sits on a steep hillside in the northern Hills, right beside Deadwood. For over a century it was home to the Homestake Mine, one of the biggest gold mines in North America, which closed in 2002 and is now an underground science laboratory.

The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center explains the mine and the science below, and an overlook shows the huge open cut. In winter, nearby Terry Peak is the Black Hills' downhill ski area.

Highlights

  • Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center
  • Open cut overlook
  • Historic Main Street
  • Terry Peak skiing in winter
  • Next door to Deadwood

Local tips

  • Pair Lead with Deadwood and Spearfish Canyon for a full day in the northern Hills.
  • Check hours and tour times for the visitor center before you go, as they change by season.
