Bear Butte

A sacred mountain rising from the plains, with a summit trail.

Bear Butte rises about 1,200 feet from the plains northeast of Sturgis. It is a sacred place for the Lakota, the Cheyenne and many other Plains nations, who come here to pray, and it is also a South Dakota state park.

The Summit Trail climbs a little under two miles each way to wide views over the prairie and the northern Hills. Please treat it as the place of worship it is.

Highlights

  • Summit Trail, a little under 2 miles each way
  • Views over the plains and the northern Hills
  • A place of living cultural importance
  • Part of Bear Butte State Park

Local tips

  • Do not touch or disturb the prayer cloths and offerings tied to trees along the trail.
  • Start early in summer and bring plenty of water.
  • During the August Sturgis Rally the roads here are very busy.
