The Mammoth Site

A working Ice Age dig, with mammoths where they fell.

The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs is an active paleontological dig inside a building, built over a sinkhole where mammoths became trapped roughly 26,000 years ago. The bones lie where they were found, and you can watch scientists at work.

Plan about an hour and a half. It pairs well with Evans Plunge and Wind Cave National Park on the same day.

Highlights

  • Columbian and woolly mammoth bones in place
  • An active excavation
  • Guided tours and fossil exhibits
  • Indoors, so good in any weather

Local tips

  • Check the Mammoth Site's tour times and hours before you drive down.
  • Hot Springs is the southern end of a good loop with Wind Cave National Park.
  • Pair it with Evans Plunge, a naturally warmed pool, for a full family day.
