Badlands National Park

Striped spires and big sky, a long day trip east.

East of the Black Hills, the Badlands rise out of the prairie as layered spires and ridges striped in tan, rose and gold. Sunrise and sunset light make the colors glow.

Plan the Badlands Loop Road, a few short boardwalk trails and, if you have time, a stop in the town of Wall on the way back. It's a full day trip from Custer.

Highlights

  • Badlands Loop Road
  • Short boardwalk trails
  • Prairie wildlife
  • Sunset color

Local tips

  • Go with a full tank, water and snacks; there's little shade and few services inside the park.
  • Summer midday heat can be intense. Early morning and late afternoon are best.
