1880 Train

A steam locomotive ride from Hill City toward Keystone.

The 1880 Train, run by the Black Hills Central Railroad, is a vintage steam train that rolls through pine forest and old mining country between Hill City and Keystone. The Hill City depot is a short walk from the town's shops and cafes.

It is a good all-ages or rainy-day outing, and a relaxed way to see the Hills without driving. Pair it with a stroll through Hill City, or with Mount Rushmore, which is a few minutes from the Keystone end.

Highlights

  • Vintage steam locomotive
  • A ride through the forest
  • Hill City depot and Main Street
  • Keystone, near Mount Rushmore, at the other end

Local tips

  • The train runs on a seasonal schedule, so check times and book ahead in summer.
  • Plan on a couple of hours for the ride itself, plus time in town.
  • Ask at the depot how to get back to your car if you ride one way.
